We find it remarkable that in the past so little attention has been paid to the health aspects of sex toys regarding the materials they are made from.
For far too long the market has been dominated by jelly-like toys made from cheap, chemically produced and environmentally unfriendly materials which are totally incompatible with La Coquette’s concept of luxury, health conscious self indulgence.

There has been debate recently about the possibly harmful effects of phthalates in sex toys and parabens in lubricants. Here is why we think they are nasty and why they are not in any of our products:
Phthalates
Phthalates are mainly used as plasticisers in order to soften plastic and increase its flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity. Although phthalates have been linked to a number of health risks, the scientific case for phthalates being a certified health risk is still as yet unproven. However, regardless of the validity of the health risk associated with phthalates, a more important issue is their association with the low quality of the sex toy’s material itself. Typically they are porous and degradeable, allowing leaching of the plastic’s chemicals into the environment. Their porosity also means the surface traps dirt and bacteria, making the toy difficult to keep clean and rendering it a potential health hazard.
La Coquette insists on only offering the best and most health conscious materials: we therefore ensure that NONE of our toys contain phthalates.
Parabens
Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They are used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties and can be found in many lubricants. Whilst commonplace, their use has become increasingly controversial with parabens being associated with a number of health risks. Although the possible health risk with parabens is unproven, we do not source any products that contain them.
ALUMINIUM - the aluminium used in our toys is medical grade and is totally bodysafe and waterproof. The metal’s thermal properties also allow the toys to be warmed up or cooled down for temperature play, by immersing in warm or iced water. For your own safety and to avoid scalding or ice burns, it is not advisable to expose the toy to extremes of hot or cold.

CERAMIC - Ceramic, or double-fired porcelain, is bodysafe, has an ultra smooth surface and is non-porous, making it very hygienic and easy to clean and keep clean. Ceramic can also be warmed or cooled in warm or iced water for extra stimulation, although for your personal safety it is recommended to avoid extremes of hot or cold.

LUCITE - Lucite is a high-grade brand of acrylic. It is incredibly tough, durable and strong, non-porous and provides very firm stimulation. Its thermal properties also allow the toys to be warmed up or cooled down for temperature play, by immersing in warm or iced water. For your own safety, and to avoid scalding or ice burns, it is not advisable to expose the toy to extremes of hot or cold.

PC-ABS – Polycarbonate ABS plastic is used in the sex toy industry for its ability to make light, rigid and molded products. It is non-porous and considered superior for its non-toxicity, hardness, gloss and toughness. The PC-ABS used in our toys is phthalate and opiate free.
However, ABS will dissolve in acetone, so it is advisable to not store your toy anywhere near your nail polish remover!

PYREX - Pyrex is a high-grade brand of borosilicate glass. The surface is ultra smooth and non-porous, making it very easy to clean and keep clean. It is also totally bodysafe and hypoallergenic, making the material ideal for those with skin allergies.
Whilst Pyrex is extremely tough and durable, care should be taken to avoid dropping your toy on hard surfaces. If the toy chips due to misuse we strongly recommend that you do not use it.

QUARTZ – Quartz is a type of vitreous or silica glass. It is hard and non-porous, making it an ideal luxury material for making sex toys with, both in terms of sensation and hygiene. Rose Quartz is highly spiritual and the essential stone for increasing love and for times of extreme emotional turmoil because it helps to remind the wearer of the importance of self-love.

SILICONE - Silicone is completely bodysafe, non-porous, soft, smooth, durable and phthalate and latex free, making it the ideal material for use in making luxury sex toys.

Essential oils are concentrated liquids from aromatic herbs and plants. Each has a distinctive scent and varied therapeutic properties, playing a pivotal role in aromatherapy.
Below is a list of essential oils that are contained in our Boudoir products, many of which are known for their aphrodisiac and romance heightening qualities, specifically for women.
CALENDULA (Calendula officinalis) - Calendula essential oil is a soothing therapeutic oil distilled from pot marigold. It is a highly effective skin regenerator and is full of antioxidants.

CEDARWOOD (Cedrus atlantica) - An essential oil with a mild balsamic fragrance, cedarwood is used in products for men and women, but its aphrodisiac effects are said to be felt most keenly in women.

CLOVE (Eugenia caryophyllata) - Cloves are a widely used spice. Clove Bud oil is made from the immature buds of the Clove tree and has been associated with enhancing romantic feelings as it increases levels of lust. It should not be used whilst pregnant.

FIG (Ficus caricus) - The fig tree is the symbol of abundance, fertility and sweetness and when used in the context of aromatherapy, the scent of the fig is supposed to enhance libido.

GERANIUM (Pelargonium graveolens) - Extracted from the leaves, this essential oil has a rose like scent. It has a calming, de-stressing effect on the emotions, thereby promoting romantic feelings.

ROSE (Rosa damascene) - The rose has a deep yet soft and hypnotic fragrance. Used throughout history, rose oil is known as the “oil of love”, acting as a means to open the heart and romantic feelings.

SANDALWOOD (Santalum album) - The aroma of sandalwood extract is said to possess aphrodisiac qualities as well as relaxing the body and easing the mind.

YLANG YLANG (Cananga odorata) - Extracted from flowers this essential oil has a rich exotic aroma and is famous for its aphrodisiac properties, balancing sexual emotions with physical sex drive. It is a calming, balancing oil.

APRICOT KERNEL OIL (Prunus armeniaca) - Rich in Vitamins A and E, this light oil helps skin retain elasticity and has calming properties.

AVOCADO OIL (Persea armeniaca) - This oil is rich in Vitamin A, C, D and E, protein, lecithin and amino acids. On account of its natural antioxidants, it keeps very well, but can go cloudy in cold weather so do not keep your massage oil in the fridge!

COCOA BUTTER (Theobroma cacao) - Cocoa butter is used to give consistency and firmness to products. It moisturises and protects the skin.

GINSENG (Panax ginseng) – Ginseng has long been taken as a tonic to enhance vitality, increase stamina and to build up resistance to the psychological and physical stresses of modern life. Because of its stimulating and stamina enhancing properties, ginseng has also been used as an effective aphrodisiac.

GRAPESEED OIL (Vitis vinifera) – Grapeseed oil leaves the skin feeling silky smooth without being too greasy. Can be used on its own, but is usually enriched with other essential oils and has a toning quality for the skin.

JOJOBA (Simmondsia chinenis) - Jojoba oil is a moisturising liquid. It closely resembles the skin’s natural oil, protecting and softening the skin and giving it a velvety feel.

MACADAMIA NUT OIL (Macadamia tetraphylla) – Macadamia is a cold pressed oil that is readily absorbed by the skin and has high levels of Omega 7 which moisturises and helps promote skin suppleness.

MUSK – Musk is a synthetic aromatic scent inspired by a musky derivative found in nature. The properties of musk are said to increase the attractiveness of women to men, promote fertility and increase feelings of lust. As such it is a powerful aphrodisiac.

SHEA BUTTER (Butyrospermum parkii) - Shea butter has excellent moisturising and healing properties, quickly penetrating deep into the skin where it promotes cell regeneration and improves elasticity.

SUNFLOWER SEED OIL (Helianthus annuus) - Sunflower seeds contain vitamins A, D, B-complex and E and are also rich in minerals such as calcium, zinc, potassium, iron and phosphorus which moisturise and enrich the skin.

VITAMIN E (Tocopherol) - Vitamin E is a classic antioxidant believed to protect the skin from the damaging effects of free radicals. Vitamin E helps skin look sleek and moisturised.

WHEATGERM OIL (Triticum sativum) - Wheatgerm oil is very high in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Applied topically, it helps promote the formation of new skin cells, improve circulation, and to help repair damage to the skin caused by the sun.

For your own interest, we have included below information on other known aphrodisiac essential oils for women which do not currently feature in our Boudoir products but which will hopefully soon.
BLACK PEPPER (Piper nigrum) - Black pepper oil is considered an aphrodisiac particularly when blended with other essential oils, particularly clove, ylang ylang, rose and jasmine.
CLARY SAGE (Salvia sclarea) - Clary Sage has a captivatingly unique aroma and can produce a sense of euphoria and happiness. Clary Sage is an aphrodisiac with a balancing effect on women. However, its use is best avoided during pregnancy.
NUTMEG (Myristica fragrans) - This warming, spicy and aphrodisiac essential oil is said to stimulate and invigorate the mind and maintain hormonal balance. It produces a spicy and rather musky aroma.
PATCHOULI (Pogostemon cablin) - Patchouli has a highly evocative, relaxing and grounding scent that is said to relieve nervous tension and has strong aphrodisiac qualities.
