International Women’s Day - March 8 2011
Article published 7 Mar 2011 16:06:01
It has come to my attention that March 8 is the 100th anniversary of "International Women's Day".
Now I’m no tub thumping feminist by any stretch of my colourful imagination: I do not burn my bras, I do shave my under arms and my passion for aggressive waxology is for purely selfish reasons rather than for the benefit of anybody else who is lucky enough to get up close and personal to such craftsmanship. But if Annie Lennox wants to lead a march to celebrate the glories of womanhood and tell everybody how wonderful we all are, who am I to argue? I suspect that the cause is (yawn) more politically and socially motivated, but where’s the fun in that...
It seems to be a massive global initiative, with women meeting on bridges all over the world, from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Brooklyn Bridge in New York to the Grand Barriere Bridge that links Rwanda to the Congo. Leaving aside the obvious celebration of how the female of the species is just fabulous and the superior of the sexes, causes being championed include empowerment, economic security, equality, education and health.
For those interested, the London March, led by Annie Lennox, will leave Borough Market at 11am on Tuesday 8 March, walking along the south side of the river to Millennium Bridge, crossing the Thames to the North side then continuing west along the river walk way past Victoria Embankment Gardens, then crossing back along Hungerford Bridge to the South side of the river and finishing at the Royal Festival Hall for speeches.
Even if the speeches are perhaps a step too far, make sure you please yourself on International Women’s Day!
